A Letter from FMA’s President on America’s Failing Infrastructure

Dear Industry Professionals,

The current state of America’s infrastructure has been in need of significant repairs and rebuilds for decades. Roads, bridges, dams, airports, drinking water, and more systems require long-term improvements to make them safe for all who rely on them.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) report card gave our country’s infrastructure a bleak grade of C-, stating it is “mostly below standard” and at “strong risk of failure.”

According to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, 47,000 U.S. bridges are currently “structurally deficient and in poor condition” and 235,000 U.S. bridges need “repair, replacement, or major rehabilitation.” Vehicles cross these compromised structures 178 million times every day.”

Now is the time to fix our infrastructure. Real action is needed for sustained investments. It’s imperative that industrial metal-centric associations work together to support the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) Build Now movement: to build momentum, build awareness, and build support for infrastructure investment.

#LetsBuildNow

MSCI elaborates on the need to build now, “After a period of sustained investment in infrastructure, we will begin to see meaningful improvements in public health, income inequality, shared prosperity, and overall quality of life for our families, our communities, and our businesses.”

What improving America’s infrastructure means for metal fabricators

Not only is public safety a top concern due to our decaying infrastructure, it also doesn’t fare well for employment in the U.S. The Business Roundtable estimates “failing to close funding gaps across America’s infrastructure systems could lead to 2.5 million lost jobs in 2025 and 5.8 million lost jobs in 2040.”

Improving the substandard conditions of America’s infrastructure will both provide countless jobs for the metal fabrication industry and demonstrate how crucial fabricated metal is to create safe and sound infrastructure systems. Our industry has a skilled workforce prepared and ready to make the necessary and long-lasting improvements to America’s failing infrastructure.

Join me in supporting the Build Now movement to create awareness and momentum for sustained investments in America’s infrastructure.

Thank you,
